The John E Martin Mental Healthcare Challenge invites graduate student teams from around the world to explore and develop innovative solutions focused on improving the quality of and access to mental healthcare. The challenge was established in 2020 by Michael Martin, Haas School of Business alumnus (FTMBA ‘09), to honor the legacy of his father, John E. Martin, a Vietnam War veteran and mental health counselor to veterans returning from war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2021 Panel : "Cultural Humility & Belonging in the Workplace: The Intersection of DEI Strategy & Mental Health"
The 2022 winning team: Team Rural Resilience (UC Berkeley)
Teams were invited to answer the following question during the first round of the competition: "How might we design a culturally responsive solution that addresses the specific mental healthcare needs of vulnerable and underserved URBAN adolescents?" And the six finalists teams were invited to consider the same question, but for RURAL adolescents in the final round.
The 2021 winning team: Team Green (Duke)
12 teams were invited from top MBA programs to find ways to improving the mental health and wellness of diverse supplier workforces (businesses that are at least 51% owned and operated by an individual or group that is part of a traditionally underrepresented or underserved group).
The 2020 winning team: Team CLiKS
12 teams were invited from top MBA programs to find ways to use data to better support construction workers facing anxiety, addiction, depression, and suicide.
